5. ALTERNATIVE/LEARNING DISORDERS MIDDLE SCHOOL

Location: Galvin Middle School, 55 Pecunit St., Canton, MA 02021

Student Age Range: 11-15 Years

General Developmental/Instructional Level:

  • Range of general functioning:  borderline to superior
  • Psychiatric or adjustment disorders and/or learning disabilities
  • Academic instruction with mainstreaming:  Grades 5-8

Specific Needs, Disabilities, Treatments & Programming Methods:

  • Behavioral and/or adjustment disorders, emotional inhibition and learning disabilities
  • Closely structured therapeutic milieu with clinical support services
  • Specific language disorders; non-verbal learning disabilities
  • Language-based individualized instruction; Frameworks-based and alternative curriculum options
  • Mainstreaming designed to enhance socialization, promote friendships, and strengthen academic skills
  • Staff: student ratio of 1:3 to meet behavioral and instructional goals

Entrance Criteria:

  • First or continuation public school program for students with inhibiting adjustment disorders, developmental language-learning disorders, and non-verbal learning disorders of attention and communication
  • Intellectual functioning within the normal range
  • Needs can be met, and behavior managed, in mainstream setting with programming ratio of 1:3

Exit Criteria:

  • Adequate attention, self-control, and interpersonal skills
  • Reading and instructional readiness are sufficient for less-restrictive environment
  • Transfer to high school unit by age 16

6. ALTERNATIVE/LEARNING DISORDERS HIGH SCHOOL

Location: Canton High School, 960 Washington St., Canton, MA   02021

Student Age Range: 14-19 Years

General Developmental/Instructional Level:

  • Range of general functioning:  borderline to superior spanning instructional levels at Grades 9-12
  • Needs in domains of social skills development and basic academic preparation for vocational-special education placements
  • Depression, adjustment problems, and learning disorders

Specific Needs, Disabilities, Treatments & Programming Methods:

  • Specific learning and mild behavioral or adjustment disorders
  • Substantial delays in academic and social skills
  • Emotional inhibition and learning disabilities
  • Language-based curriculum with individualized mainstreaming
  • Therapeutic milieu with clinical support services
  • Staff:student ratio of 1:3 to meet adjustment and instructional goals

Entrance Criteria:

  • First or continuation public school program for students with inhibiting adjustment disorders, poor social skills or severe specific learning disabilities
  • Intellectual functioning within the normal range
  • Needs can be met, and behavior managed, in mainstream setting with programming ratio of 1:3

Exit Criteria:

  • Adequate attention and self-control, social interaction skills, and instructional readiness for less-restrictive environment
  • Qualifications for high school graduation by sending school district by age 19
